Synopsis

When Noémie's teenaged son is accused of rape, it triggers traumatic memories from 25 years ago. Alarmed by her own complicity, she breaks her silence and denounces her two rapists, now eminent members of Montreal society. These men must be made to accept responsibility for their actions. Only then can Noémie's clenched core of frozen trauma thaw. Noémie's denunciation devastates the professional and domestic aspirations of her abusers.

River Ice, Breaking is a brilliant, entertaining, and articulate exploration of one of the most heinous (and common) acts that MANkind is capable of--rape. Déraspe takes a multi-layered, disarmingly humourous approach, to this, the most serious of subjects, and succeeds in elevating our understanding--of all sides. River Ice, Breaking does not vilify individual monsters, but rather, the monstrosity of cycles of systemic sexism sustained through toxic silence. The author and translator of River Ice, Breaking will spend ten days at the Glassco Translation Residency in Tadoussac, hosted by Playwrights' Workshop Montreal.
