As summer approaches, Talisman looks ahead to a busy year with many exciting projects. In May we announced our 2018-2019 season at the MTL Indie Theatre Launch. This season’s main production will be the world English-language premiere of Clean Slate, the translation of Catherine Chabot’s sensational Table Rase. Clean Slate will run March 18-30, 2019 at La Chapelle Theatre.

Talisman is also undertaking two new translations of plays by emerging playwrights (Minuit by Marie-Hélène Truchon-Larose and Le Brasier by David Paquet) which will lay the groundwork for future seasons. The excitement kicks off in the fall with a series of public readings and a fundraising event - so enjoy the summer and we hope to see you then!

Six friends gather at a site of their shared childhood: They drink, they laugh, but most importantly, they admit things they’ve never before had the courage to say. In a time where the heroes of the past exist less and less, the young women must support each other as they independently become the heroes they need. Inspired by the seemingly incomprehensible decision of their friend, the girls make a pact to shed their traumas and bad habits and start afresh. With the honesty and intimacy of a death bed, Clean Slate allows the audience to eavesdrop on a brave, messy, and above all authentic portrait of millennial sisterhood.

Thanks to CAM en tournée and the Cole Foundation, Talisman Theatre toured four (4) burroughs of the Island of Montreal. We shared this tale of intercultural integration with 400 new audience members including 113 students, and played to a full house at the new NDG maison de la culture (Salle Iro Valaskakis-Tembeck) on Monkland.

Talisman is happy to announce that we have two new plays in translation: Midnight (Minuit) by Marie-Hélène Larose Truchon, translated by Alexis Diamond with translation dramaturg Linda Gaboriau, and 'Le brasier' by David Paquet, translated by Leanna Brodie.

In Midnight, a family fights to conserve their heritage in a dystopian society where language and culture are highly regulated, in an allegory of Quebecois issues of language accommodation.

'Le brasier' is a comedy as fiercely dark as any Greek tragedy, a multi-generational drama, a triptych that follows different characters, all subject to the weight of a haunting family history. Public readings of both works are scheduled for Fall 2018.

We are happy to welcome Ada Sinacore to the Board of Directors, Ada is the Chair of the Gender, Sexuality, Feminist, and Social Justice Studies Program in the Institute for Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies, the Director of the Social Justice and Diversity Research Lab, and an Associate Professor in the Counselling Psychology Program at McGill University. Dr. Sinacore has over 20 years of experience working in the U.S., Canada, and abroad and has received numerous honours and awards. She is a Fellow of the Canadian Psychological Association and received the Distinguished Member Award from the Section on Counselling Psychology of the Canadian Psychological Association. Most recently, she received the Faculty of Education Award for Distinguished Teaching at the 2017 Convocation.

À l'approche de l'été, Talisman anticipe une année occupée par de nombreux projets passionnants. En mai, nous annoncions notre saison 2018-2019 au lancement du MTL Indie Theatre. Six jeunes femmes se réunissent au chalet où elles ont passé leurs étés d'adolescentes: Elles boivent, elles rient, et s’avouent les choses qu’elles n’ont jamais eu le courage de se dire. Dans un monde où les héros existent de moins en moins, ces femmes doivent s’entre-aider et devenir leurs propres héroïnes. Inspirées par la décision incompréhensible de leur amie, les filles font le pacte de laisser leurs problèmes derrière elles et décident de repartir à zéro. Dans toute l’honnêteté d’une veillée funèbre, Clean Slate est un portrait authentique de la solidarité féminine contemporaine.

Dans Minuit, une famille se bat pour conserver son héritage dans une société dystopique où la langue et la culture sont fortement réglementées, dans une allégorie des problèmes d'accommodement linguistique au Québec.

'Le brasier' est une comédie aussi féroce qu’une tragédie grecque, un drame multi-générationnel, un triptyque qui suit différents personnages, tous soumis au poids d'une histoire familiale envoûtante. Les lectures publiques des deux œuvres sont prévues pour l'automne 2018.

Ada L. Sinacore est titulaire d'un Ph.D. de la chair du programme d'études de genre, sexualité, féminisme et justice sociale à l'Institut des études féministes et de genre. Elle est directrice du laboratoire de recherche sur la justice sociale et la diversité et professeur associée au programme de consultant en psychologie à l'université McGill. Le Dr Sinacore a plus de 20 ans d'expérience aux États-Unis, au Canada et à l'étranger. Elle a reçu de nombreux honneurs et récompenses. Elle est membre de la Société canadienne de psychologie et a reçu le Prix Membre Distingué de la Section de psychologie du "counseling" de la Société canadienne de psychologie. Plus récemment, elle a reçu le Prix de la Faculté d'éducation pour Enseignant Distingué lors de la collation des grades de 2017.
